Having a micro-needling treatment? Here’s what you need to know before and after your experience.

What is Automated Micro-Needling?

Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin repair process results in a thicker dermis with the appearance of softer wrinkles. Micro-Needling also creates superficial micro-channels that allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.

What are the Benefits?

The benefits of micro-needling are a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. It also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks and generally creates a fresher appearance or glow to the skin.

What areas of the body can I treat?

Micro-needling can be used on all parts of the body: face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

How is the procedure done?

A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the pen. Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs.

Next, in a single motion, the pen will gently press against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What does it feel like?

The feeling associated with micro-needling is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes about an hour, depending on the size of the area treated.

What is the downtime?

Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the depth of the needles used and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, clients are red for up to 2-4 days. Some clients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.

Using hyaluronic acid and other quality skin care products, provided by your provider, can help to speed up the healing process.

When will I see results?

Clients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

How many treatments will I need?

Some clients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most clients to receive a series of 3-6 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For clients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals.

Before Micro-Needling Treatment:

Prior to the micro-needling treatment, please observe the following:

  • No Retin-A products or applications 12-36 hours prior to your treatment.

  • No auto-immune therapies or products 21 hours to your treatment.

  • No prolonged sun exposure to the face 24 hours prior to your treatment. Treatment will not be administered on sunburned skin.

  • On the day of treatment, please keep your face clean and do not apply makeup.

  • If an active or extreme breakout occurs before treatment, please contact me.

After Micro-Needling Treatment:

Here’s what can be expected immediately after your micro-needling treatment:

  • You will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside after 1 to 2 hours and will normally diminish within the same day or 24 hours.

  • You may see slight redness after 24 hours but only in minimal areas or spots.

Post-Micro-Needling Treatment Instructions:

  1. CLEAN - Use a gentle cleanse and tepid water to cleanse the face for the following 72 hours and gently dry the treated skin. Always make sure that your hands are clean when touching the treated area.

  2. HEAL - Serum antioxidants are recommended post-treatment as the properties are ideal to help heal the skin. These products can help soothe the skin and lessen irritation.

  3. HYDRATE - Following your micro-needling treatment, your skin may feel drier than normal. Hyaluronic Acid is an ideal ingredient to hydrate and restore the skin back to perfect balance.

  4. MAKEUP - It is recommended that makeup should not be applied for 24 hours after the procedure. Do not apply any makeup with a makeup brush, especially if it’s not clean.

  5. PROTECT - Immediately after the procedure, apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with an SPF 25 or greater. A chemical-free sunscreen is highly recommended.

Finally, please avoid these products and activities post-treatment to ensure the proper healing environment:

  • For at least 3 days post-treatment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) or anything perceived as “active” skincare.

  • Avoid intentional and direct sunlight for 24 hours. No tanning beds.

  • Do not go swimming for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

  • No exercising or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments are harmful, rife with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions.
